I simply love this lens, it gives great picture quality and a very wide field of view. As you can see here the picture quality is very good, no vignetting and little chromatic aberration.

The lens is quite large, but I love the sound of the focusing motor. It has a minimum focus distance of 0.28m/11,02 in which you can make some great shots in macro too.

Some people are wondering why the lens is not an ultra wide angle with a 12mm focal length. The reason for this is simple, you can’t create a sharp image with any lens when it is wider than 10mm. However, prime lenses are usually faster than their “equivalent” zooms – for example, the 50mm f/1.8 is faster than the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, due to a smaller aperture opening – while the telephoto zooms are usually slower, for example the 55-300 is at f/4-5.6.

This lens is an exception. It is still faster than many prime lenses, and it is one of the fastest medium telephoto lenses in general. The lens has a 7 blade diaphragm which gives it rounded bokeh. Additionally, the new optical design with eBAND and BBAR coatings are supposed to reduce ghosting and flares for better contrast.

The lens comes with a removable tripod mount, which allows slightly more protection of the lens. It also has VC (Vibration Control) which helps to reduce blur in low light or high magnification.

It is a great lens for portraits, landscapes and architecture. The image quality in combination with the fast f/2.8 aperture is impressive throughout the zoom range. The compact design ensures that it can go anywhere you go!  The only weakness of this lens are probably the corners at 24mm but they are really not bad either no matter what other people say.

Many people were surprised when Sigma announced that they would launch an Art series lens because this used to be their Pro line of lenses whereas the Art lenses are more targeted at enthusiast photographers.

A new feature on this lens is that it has no traditional focusing motor which makes some people think that it can only be used with Sony full frame mirrorless cameras or Nikon DSLRs with built-in focus motors. This isn’t the case though because Sigma have included their own HSM (Hypersonic motor) which is similar to Canon USM and Nikon SWM lenses.

This lens also features Sigma’s new optical stabilising unit which is activated in the camera body so there are no switches on the lens. The stabilizer offers a claimed 4-stops of stabilization which is great, especially considering that it doesn’t add any bulk to the lens or make it bigger.

The build quality of this lens is excellent. When you hold it in your hands, you will feel the quality and solidity straight away. If you use this lens for an extended period of time, you will notice that it is very well balanced on any camera with a battery grip because most of the weight is towards the front. The lens hood is made of plastic but still feels solid and provides a good amount of protection for the front element.

There are no buttons or switches on the lens so you cannot change any settings without going into the camera menus which is a bit disappointing especially when it comes to using Sigma’s USB dock which allows you to customise many features of your lenses.  Still, this doesn’t lower my rating of the lens because it is not a Pro style lens and you probably won’t be frequently changing settings on it either.

The focus ring rotates about 80 degrees from 24mm to 70mm which makes manual focusing somewhat difficult especially when photographing moving objects such as people or cars etc. The aperture ring can also be easily turned even when the camera is pointed straight down towards the floor, which can be quite annoying.

The minimum focusing distance is 0.28m (11 inches) throughout the entire zoom range which makes it a great macro lens as well because you can focus extremely close to subjects and play around with different types of compositions such as using the natural shallow depth of field that gives images some real character.

The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art lens is an excellent choice for portrait photographers because it delivers beautiful bokeh and sharp details even at f/2.8 which means that you can use it to take pictures in very low light conditions without having to increase the ISO speed too much. The optical stabilizer is also perfect for shooting indoors without a flash because you can shoot at slower shutter speeds even in dim conditions.
