Best Cameras for Real Estate Photography in 2022

Looking for the best cameras for real estate photography and videography in 2022? Your search ends right here.

The picture of a big, bulky, and uncomfortable DSLR will usually spring to mind when we’re talking about the best camera for real estate photography.

Professionally, it seems to be the required standard, but you may be surprised to learn it’s not like that in reality.

In the year 2022, though the DSLRs will still be the best means to shoot real estate photos, the mirrorless camera will take their place as one of the contenders for that title.

Here are the cameras I believe to be the best in the business for real estate photography. The list includes both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.

Now let’s review the features that a camera must possess to be a success in real estate photography:

3 Essential Features Every Real Estate Camera Must Have

Right Lens Mount

Lens mounts also define the angle from which the scene in front of the camera can be viewed as well as the slice it can capture of the scene.

Depending on the sensor that sits behind the lens mount, a camera’s lens mount is also a very important factor.

This can be seen in the following example:

Both the EF and the EF-S lenses can be used with the Canon D-SLR camera systems.

Digital SLR cameras first found use on 35mm film and continued to use them when digital SLR cameras were launched. EF mounts have been in use for years.

As the Canon EOS Rebel created its first line of budget cameras and needed a way to mount wide-angle lenses at a low cost, the EF-S mount was developed.

The company can deliver more affordable wide-angle lenses by installing the EF-S mount at an angle closer to the camera due to the slender thickness of the EF-S mount.

As the sensor is smaller on EF-S than other mounts, the angle of view becomes narrower when mounted to a lens.

Hence, the type of camera you choose (and its accompanying lens mount) can affect the field of view.

Improved Low Light Performance

Many real estate photos are taken in low light, which is a challenge for photographers.

Images with a great deal of grain (static) are best taken in less than great lighting or during a time when the property is in the blue hour.

I recommend Back-side Illuminated (BSI) cameras for real estate photography because sensor technology has a massive impact on the stability and quality of the images produced by the camera.

Large Sensor Size

Real estate photographers prefer to use a full-frame camera because it allows them to capture a larger angle of view for the scene. Their camera has a large sensor, which means the camera can capture more of the scene.

Larger sensors allow for more pixels to be stacked, which can produce better light-gathering qualities. This is because there is less clutter on the surface, so the pixels have a greater ability to collect light.

No matter which camera you choose, you’ll know you are getting a product you can use, as we’ll make sure they all have these three features.

There are advantages and disadvantages to every camera, so in order to help you pick the one that’s best for you, we’ll list them.

Today I will be discussing the top cameras on the market right now for real estate photography:

Top Cameras for a Perfect Real Estate Photography

1. Sony Alpha a7R IV (Best Camera for High Quality Real Estate Videos/Photos)

Sony α7R IV

  • 61-megapixel full-frame Exmor R BSI sensor
  • The 567-points phase-detection autofocusing system
  • BIONZ X image processing engine
  • 4K video shooting with Log-Gamma and HLG
  • 3-inch touchscreen
  • Built-in image stabilization
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built-in

A7R IV real estate photographers prefer it for its high resolution, which makes it one of the highest resolution cameras on the market.

Beyond real estate, the a7R IV has a lot of other applicability, but let’s just focus on its utility as a real estate shooter.

Its high resolution makes it one of the best full-frame interchangeable lens cameras out there. At 61 megapixels, it is one of the highest resolution full-frame cameras on the market today.

Since mirrorless cameras are much lighter than DSLRs, they can be used for most real estate photo shoots. No longer will you be slow down shooting with a DSLR, since a mirrorless camera will enable you to shoot even as you travel.

The camera features an optical image stabilization system built into it which works on five axes. Hand-held photos appear sharp even when taken handheld.

Large resolution means you can crop future images in a post-processing process and still have unsurpassed detail in them. If you like shooting wide and cropping images in post-processing, you will appreciate the Sony a7R IV.

A few reasons I like the a7R IV, and also why I like the D850 is the built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi features. These are great for sharing quick photos with your client or telling them your vision for the final image.

Having the opportunity to share a photo of the tentative final look right there in the moment is truly awesome.

2. Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (Best Camera for Stills and Video)

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

  • 30.4-megapixel CMOS full-frame sensor
  • DIGIC 6+ image processing engine.
  • DCI 4K video at 30 fps.
  • Dual-pixel CMOS autofocusing with Movie-Servo AF.
  • 61-point High Density reticular autofocusing system.
  • Native ISO goes up to 32000.
  • 3.2-inch touchscreen with touch to focus functionality.
  • Internal 4K footages at 4:2:2 sampling rate with 8-bit color.

Taking still pictures and videos has never been easier by using the Canon 5D Mark IV.

This camera is my favourite general-purpose camera, in my opinion. I reviewed it recently.

Throughout the history of Canon’s 5D series, there has always been a strong fans following among its loyal users.

The camera system has consistently improved by introducing new features with each iteration and has always been pushing the limits of image-making.

It’s impressive, but you can capture sharp details of any real estate property with a 30.4 megapixel CMOS camera.

Even though the photo sensor does not have a bottom-illuminated sensor, the DIGIC 6+ image processor is good for low-light photography.

Video recording is another strength of the 5D Mark IV. Its feature list makes it ideal for capturing real estate video.

A real estate video doesn’t have to be shot at a high resolution, and it doesn’t need advanced filmmaking tools.

Therefore, dual-pixel CMOS autofocus option, as well as 4K, is another great feature to have.

3. Nikon D850 (Best DSLR Camera for Real Estate Photography)

Nikon D850 FX-format Digital SLR Camera

  • 45.7-megapixel CMOS BSI sensor
  • EXPEED 5 image processor
  • 4K video recording at 30 fps.
  • Multi-CAM 20K 153-point autofocusing system.
  • 180k-pixel RGB sensor
  • Native ISO of 64-25600

There are many reasons why this is our favorite Nikon DSLR. It’s also a good choice for real estate stills & video too. Scroll through the different features of the camera.

In Nikon’s lineup the D850 is comparable to the 5D Mark IV in Canon’s lineup. Both camera systems are outstanding.

An advantage of the D850 is its BSI sensor. It performs better in low light since it can respond to light more precisely than traditional sensors. Result – higher quality and greater dynamic range in low light.

Photographers have been known to make a fascinating image through the use of the blue hour when taking real estate photos. The blue hues of the sky are contrasted with the yellow/white of the lighting of the building.

There aren’t that many photographers who do it. But the ones that do will love the D850’s low-light feature.

In contrast to most cameras in the market, the Nikon D850 has an ISO range of 64 compared to best in class ISO 100. This means it will have better details when shooting in extremely bright conditions.

Another noteworthy feature of this camera is the built-in time-lapse functionality of 8K resolution.

The service of offering video to clients is one that not many photographers provide.

I guarantee you that your clients will be very interested in showing clients a time-lapse sequence of their property if you know the potential of using video in real estate marketing.

The built-in camera and Bluetooth capabilities may not seem like major selling points to real estate photographers, but those features can help impress clients. Take an image, transfer it to your phone via Bluetooth, edit in Lightroom mobile and share it with your client.

Sharing your vision with your client in the form of a picture is the best way to explain what you envision. Boom! You’re a marketing pro without realizing it.
